House of Light Initially a modest single story structure on a steep hill, this 1950’s house was in its original condition when the owners decided to update and expand it, gaining views of downtown San Francisco and the East Bay. The house had a simple, clear floor plan, conducive to a vertical addition and expansion from within. The old exterior light-and-stair well is now a generous interior stair and atrium, ending in a south-facing deck at the top of the new, second story; light pouring into the center of the house. A tiny, obsolete bedroom was converted to a walk-in closet, expanding an adjacent bedroom. The upstairs master suite is lit by a corner window framing the Downtown and Bay views. Its adjacent small library is a refuge, with its own generous view of the city beyond. |
