The KPa+d Philosophy

Design must always serve the needs of comfort and utility. But beyond utility lies the possibility of real delight. To create delight is to weave personal taste into all aspects of a solution. It is about designing a dream home and not just a house.

A dream home fulfills the heart’s desires by surrounding us with the people and things we love. As an architect, I merge function with imagination to orchestrate a rarefied experience within the context of everyday living. Whether the point of departure is an empty lot or a remodel of an existing house, the dream home is an opportunity waiting to be realized.

The first step is to identify wants and needs: both the material requirements of the home and the "wish list" of likes and dislikes. Equally important is the context in which we are working: site, existing conditions, budget and schedule. As an architect, I strive to compliment and enhance the best qualities of the surrounding landscape by devising graceful solutions in line with clients’ desires.

Analysis of a site's characteristics is the architect's first responsibility. A house that is well suited to its landscape and climate offers its inhabitants the greatest possible comfort and utility. Comfort is mediated by functionality: one's ability to enjoy a home throughout the year depends on the happy marriage of structure and setting. In addition to views and vegetation, factors like sun orientation, light quality, wind direction and seasonal temperatures have enormous impact on daily life.

The next step is an examination of all the functional components. I will ask: What will this house witness? Are there children? Pets? A home office? A studio workshop? Will there be parties or family gatherings? What is the daily rhythm of your life? Does it revolve around slow mornings and home cooked dinners or instant coffee and take out? The best solution will incorporate the answers to these questions with a balance between privacy and shared living.

Finally, the integration of personal taste and individual sensibility enables us to create a common theme that threads all the parts together, giving the dream coherence, body, and reality, and elevating design to the inspired pursuit of delight. The result is a home that encourages gracious living.
