KPa+d Collaborative Working on competitions as a group provides the office with the opportunity to develop ideas and explore methods that transcend the daily scope of our practice. Unfettered by budgetary and scheduling constraints, we can dream, research, and read about the latest conceptual advances in the field of architecture. Collaborative thinking at its best results in better solutions than the sum of any whole would produce. After agreeing upon a specific competition to enter, all members of the team freely discuss ideas, debating the relative merits of various concepts and themes in an open fashion that fosters creativity and originality in the design process. Conceptual projects offer the opportunity to experiment with presentation styles like 3-dimensional computer modeling, photomontage, and the employment of untraditional materials and methods in model building. The purpose of these collaborative exercises is to explore and expand upon directions that are not currently a major part of our practice, allowing us to engage in sub-disciplines as diverse as public housing, retail architecture, and product design. As a result, the KPa+d collaborative enhances our practice by informing our active office projects in unexpected ways. |
